Convection heat transfer coefficient
nouns
Quantifies the influence of fluid, surface, and flow properties when convection heat transfer occurs.
Example: The CONVETIVE HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT is dependent upon the physical properties of the fluid and the physical situation.
en: Coeficiente de transferencia de calor por convección
null
Critical Reynold’s number
nouns
A Reynolds number at which the flow of a fluid changes from laminar to turbulent.
Example: For flow over a flat plate, the generally accepted value of the CRITICAL REYNOLDS NUMBER is 500000
en: Número crítico de Reynolds
Friction Coefficient
noun
It links the opposition to sliding offered by the surfaces of two bodies in contact according to the intensity of the mutual support they experience. It is a dimensionless coefficient.
Example: The theoretical optimisation of disc brakes is primarily associated with the geometry of the disc and pad assembly, along with the FRICTION COEFFICIENT of the pad material.
en: Coeficiente de fricción
null
Kinematic viscosity
nouns
The kinematic viscosity is an atmospheric variable defined as the ratio between the dynamic viscosity μ and the density ρ of the fluid and depends on both air temperature and pressure.
Example: This is not as intuitive as absolute viscosity as it would appear, take air as an example which under standard conditions has a higher KINEMATIC VISCOSITY than water owing to its lower density.
en: Viscosidad cinemática
null
Laminar flow
nouns
The fluid moves in parallel sheets without intermingling, and each fluid particle follows a smooth path, called a streamline.
Example: For LAMINAR FLOW the velocity at the centre is at the maximum and at the wall is zero.
en: Flujo laminar
null
Nusselt number
nouns
Is dimensionless parameter used in calculations of heat transfer between a moving fluid and a solid body.
Example: When the Rayleigh number is less than 1000, the heat transfer is considered to be solely by conduction and the NUSSELT NUMBER takes the value of unity.
en: Número de Nusselt
Prandtl number
Nouns
The ratio of the product of the coefficient of viscosity and the specific heat at constant pressure to the thermal conductivity in fluid flow used especially in the study of heat transfer in mechanical devices.
Example: For motor oil, convection is very efficient at transferring heat compared to conduction, therefore the PRANDTL NUMBER is high.
en: Número de prandtl
null
Reynold number
nouns
It is a dimensionless number used in fluid mechanics, reactor design, and transport phenomena to characterize the motion of a fluid. Its value indicates whether the flow follows a laminar or turbulent pattern.
Example: With a different REYNOLD NUMBER for the prototype this can lead to results of the prototype being different than those that will be achieved when the final component is tested.
en: Número de Reynold
null
Shear stress
nouns
Shear stresses appear in the event of application of a shear force or a torsional moment.
Example: The SHEAR STRESS and shear rate is calculated, and each of these is related to the torque and angular velocity respectively.
en: Tención cortante
Turbulent flow
nouns
It is characterized by low momentum diffusion, high convection, and rapid spatio-temporal changes in pressure and velocity.
Example: Large inertial forces seem to tend toward a TURBULENT FLOW being present in comparison to a high viscosity which oppositely tends to create a rather more laminar flow.
en: Flujo turbulento
